As someone who used be obsessed with shopping for clothes, I’m really surprised that I’m even writing this post. In my mind, shopping really was my cardio. Now, I’m finally at a point in my life where I do not feel the need to constantly go shopping. For me, kicking my shopping addiction was a long and slow process, but so worth it. My wallet and my small apartment thank me. Here are some tips on how to break your shopping addiction.

1.Unsubscribe from email alerts:

Marketers know that advertising sales will make consumers want to visit their websites and spend money. I’m sure you are familiar with the “We’ve Missed You” or the “Don’t Forget About Your Shopping Cart” emails. When companies aren’t constantly asking you via email to shop with them, it eventually turns into an out of sight, out of mind kind of thing. Unroll is a great free tool that helps you quickly unsubscribe from unwanted emails.

2. Find a new hobby:

Replace your shopping hobby with a different (maybe less expensive) hobby, such as reading, exercising, or writing. Also, try to start thinking of shopping as a task that should only happen when you need something (or really want) something, instead of a hobby.

3. Avoid malls when hanging out with friends

When choosing a spot to meet up with friends, try to choose somewhere other than the mall. Also, be sure to choose an activity that doesn’t involve shopping (or window-shopping). Instead, go to a restaurant or go on hike…or do anything in nature really.

4. Create a shopping list

Making a list of things you need to buy will help you determine when you actually should go shopping. Try to only go shopping to buy what you need and don’t stray from your list. The moment we start browsing is usually when we get in trouble.

5. Wait to purchase

Avoid spur of the moment purchases. When you see an item you think you want to buy, do not buy it. Instead, give yourself a week or two to think about the purchase. If the item is still on your mind a week later, go back to buy it. Otherwise, leave it behind. This can save you a lot of money.
