I hate to say it, but I’ve made so many thrifting mistakes in my life. As much as I’d like to say I don’t make these mistakes anymore, that just wouldn’t be true. So as a reminder to myself to stop making these mistakes, I thought it would be helpful to share some common thrift shopping mistakes that I’ve made and that you might currently be making.

Common Thrifting Mistakes To Avoid:

1. Not doing your research

The key to finding a good thrift store is doing your research. Do a quick google or yelp search to discover the top-rated thrift stores in your area. The stores with the highest rankings are probably worth visiting.

2. Focusing on sizes

Don’t focus too much on the size of an item. Thrift stores sometimes mismark items, so a size small could very much fit like a size large. Also, vintage sizes differ from modern sizes. So for these reasons, I say the item looks like it’ll fit, try it on.

3. Not checking quality

Make sure the item is in tip-top shape before buying.

4. Buying because of price

Just because a shirt is only $2, does not mean you need it. Buy items because you love them, not because you love the price.

5. Not shopping on sale days

Most thrift stores offer extra discount days (i.e. students, military, teachers, etc.). Try to shop on the days relevant to you to get the best deals.
