Are you dreaming of low waste and no waste swaps for your everyday essentials? Finding sustainable replacements is easier than you think! Today, there are so many sustainable options for personal hygiene and beauty products. It’s simply a matter of finding which products work well for you. Begin your swaps journey by exploring the 10 sustainable bathroom product swaps below.

1. Refillable Skincare

Exchange your disposables mentality for keepsakes of sorts! Buy skincare products that are refillable. We love Activist Skincare*, their Healing Water Toning Mist* (cucumber scent) as well as the Sea To Skin Cleansing Gel*(ocean breeze). Both of these come in beautiful glass bottles that can be refilled. Gently tear open the mylar package and refill your product of choice.

2. Reusable Makeup Remover Rounds

Switch out your makeup remover wipes for reusable cotton rounds*! You can easily remove makeup with a reusable cotton round and coconut oil. We honestly think coconut oil works better than a traditional makeup remover. Plus, coconut oil is multi-purpose!

3. Liquid Hand Soap

Get your hands on the Blueland hand soap set. You get a beautiful glass bottle and powerful soap tablets. Fill the bottle with water up to its “fill to” line and then drop in the tablet, letting it dissolve. Voila! Liquid hand soap. Minimal packaging. Compostable packaging. It’s a dream.

4. Bar Soap

Our favorite bar soap right now is by the black-owned company, butter+lye: the Oil Reducing Charcoal Face And Body Soap. We love this soap. It comes in simple, recyclable cardboard packaging and works wonders! If you want to reduce the packaging from your purchases altogether, stores like Sprouts and Whole Foods sell bar soap without the packaging.

5. Shampoo Bars + Conditioner Bars

Can you really wash and condition your hair with shampoo bars and conditioner bars? Yes, you can! We love the Mango Breeze conditioner bar by Humby Organics. It gives great slip and smells so good.

6. Safety Razor

Say your last goodbye to plastic razors and say hello to Safety Razors. The Safety Razor will last a lifetime and with a package of 100 razor blades, you are good to go for a few months!

7. Bamboo Toothbrush

We’re still on the hunt for a bamboo toothbrush* that we really like. We find that the bristles are often still made with plastic and the bristles don’t feel super strong on the teeth. But the bamboo handle is compostable! Let us know if you’ve found a low waste swap for toothbrushes that you love.

8. Toothpaste Tablets

Switch out your toothpaste for toothpaste tablets. The tablets we love are by Bite, but you can find toothpaste tablets in many sustainable shops and stores. The Bite tablets are a lovely Fresh Mint flavor. To brush your teeth, you take out a tablet and bite down on it. Take your wet toothbrush and brush! You can reuse the glass bottles in which the tablets come for other things, but it is possible to get them refilled for their original purpose. Los Angeles has refill stations for Bite tablets, but there are also many sustainably packaged refills for toothpaste tablets.

9. Menstrual Cup

There are great alternatives to traditional tampons and pads. We love Lena menstrual cup! Menstrual cups are durable and can last up to ten years with proper care. They are way more comfortable than pads and tampons. It’s also cheaper over time. It’s a game changer. Pro tip: if you ever need a break from your menstrual cup, you can use sustainable reusable pads.

10. Bamboo Toilet Paper

Make the switch from traditional toilet paper to bamboo toilet paper. One brand we love is Reel, tree-free 100% bamboo paper*! When bamboo is chopped to make paper products, it’s not actually getting rid of the plant. After it’s cut, it can grow a couple feet in a day. It’s not an endless supply, but it’s a very giving plant. Reel mails the toilet paper to you in a cardboard box, with plastic-free packaging. What’s even better? Reel toilet paper can be found in numerous Target stores across the U.S.!
